designer’s worst enemy

Wednesday, November 14th, 2007 at 4:42 pm

…is his own fear.

Designing is a creative endeavor. Being creative means having the capacity to create; to come up with something new.

To be able to do that, a designer needs to try approaches that appear unconventional or even different ideas that appear foolish.

Doing that, as in doing other visionary actions, involves a big risk; risk of being ridiculed and misunderstood. This is why many designers choose to “play safe” and not take that risk.

That fear keeps a designer from trying different things outside of the known solutions. If keeps him from asking the question “what if…”. It keeps him from being creative. It keeps him from creating.
