back to basic: design process discipline

Thursday, August 10th, 2006 at 11:53 pm

I used to have a very clear design process that I follow fanatically, but somewhere along the way, I abandoned it. Not entirely, but I cut corners. I skip steps and fail to ask questions.

As I struggle to come up with a concept for the next version of my portfolio site which will be a representation of my mixed skills, experience and passion, I realize I do not have a clear concept of what I am going to create because I skip the first step: ask questions to understand what I'm really trying to communicate.

I've been looking around for other portfolio sites and I've gathered styles and interaction models that I like. All those are good, but if I don't know what I'm trying to communicate, putting cool effects, styles and interaction models together will be like taking parts from different types of machines and put them together. The end product might work, but it will be a frankenstein-like piece.

Often times I skip steps in my design process due to necessity. I need to deliver and I don't have the luxury of doing every single step. So I just have to finish the deliverables. And yes, I've gotten better at it so I've adapted the process to still deliver decent quality work within tight turnaround time. I know how to design something that looks nice, but I've lost the clarity of my design process which hurts my ability to create an effective design that communicates.

I need to implement this discipline back in my own design process first, then impart it to my designers.

flash 3D rotation tutorial

Thursday, August 10th, 2006 at 12:03 pm

http://www.flashvista.com/details/item/3172/

A good (and short) tutorial from FlashVista that explains the basic concept of 3D and the math calculation involved.

I'm not sure about the way the movie clip depth is set in this tutorial. There might be a better way than using duplicateMovieClip() method, but seems like it works well that way.

Can a design be effective if it doesn't invoke emotion?

Lots of cool stuff for online collaboration, communication, file sharing, utilities, etc. at the price of fresh air…hmm that might be pricy since it's a rare commodity these days, but you get the idea: GRATIS!

Free conference calls

free conference logo https://www.freeconference.com/Home.aspx

Not sure how these guys stay in business with the free service that they offer since thefree services seem sufficient for most cases and the users who needs the premium service most likely have a solution integrated to their phone system.

In any case, this is a good resource that compliments the free virtual meeting, yugma.com (formerly letspowwow).

various styles 02

Tuesday, August 8th, 2006 at 11:33 pm

various_styles2.gifA radom freeflow drawing to explore ways to incoporate various styles into one composition harmoniously.

I'm trying to find a way to use this type of illustration to display my work since I feel that the way I display my work on my portfolio site currently is too safe and predictable.

my creative process

Tuesday, August 8th, 2006 at 11:03 pm

My creative process can be summed up in one activity: repeteadly asking myself the same question.

The question is: "What if I try this?"
